Brief Local History of Downham SE12 & BR1
Downham means ‘the village on the hill’, although until the 1920’s there were no houses in Downham. In 1923, London County County Council bought 600 acres of farmland between Catford and Bromley as a compulsory purchase and decided to build a new housing estate in that area. Many of the local names were taken from the legends of King Arthur including Malory School. As time went on transport to London was made available either by taking a train from Grove Park or by a tram from Southend. The new library was opened in 2006 and included a leisure and health centre.
