Hither Green was one of several well known greens in Lewisham, near green, Hither Green and Further Green. Hither Green was a wooded area throughout the Middle Ages but the by the middle of the eighteenth century, most of the trees had been cut down:( In 1896, many of the roads were given Scottish names by Archibald Corbett including the land he gave to build St Andrews church, Patron Saint of Scotland.
