Deptford was another ford across the River Ravensbourne, the ‘deep ford’. This is where Deptford got it’s name and the area is even mentioned in Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’! At Sayes Court, a local manor house, Samuel Pepys was a regular visitor as his friend and fellow-diarist John Evelyn lived there. Brief Local History of Lewisham
The original village of Lewisham stretched along Lewisham High Street the ancient parish church of St Mary. The name Lewisham derives from ‘Old English’ Ham, meaning a village. The first part of the name comes from the name of a person, possibly by the name of Leof or Leofsa’s village. Poet James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915) originates from Gilmore Road. Walter de la Mare (1873-1956) was another famous Lewisham resident who was said to live in Brookbank Road in the 1880’s.
